Campbeltown Malts
Glen Scotia Distillery
Located at Campbeltown, the distillery has had a chequered history since its opening in 1832, and is currently closed.
The distillery is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a previous owner, who drowned himself in Campbeltown Loch.
Springbank Distillery
Located in Campbeltown, it is built on the site of an illicit still. It was built in 1828 in 'Distillers' Row' alongside Longrow, Rieclachan, Union, Springside and Argyll distilleries.
At one time there were 30 distilleries in Campbeltown. Springbank is the only one left in production. The Longrow site is now the car park for Springbank, and Springbank retains the Longrow name on one of its whisky ranges.
The whole of the whisky making process, from the cutting of the peats to the final bottling, takes place at the distillery, with traditional methods being followed. Part of the whisky is triple distilled, which enhances the mellowness and flavour of the final spirit.
The wash still is partly heated by a naked flame, and a rummager, dragged around inside, prevents the yeast from sticking and burning, although a little toastiness is detected in the final whisky. There is a bell on top of the rummager. If the bell stops ringing, there is a problem.
