Eastern Highland Eastern Highland

These distilleries are situated on the East Coast between Dundee and Aberdeen.
Unfortunately many of the Eastern Highland Distilleries are no longer in production.
These distilleries nestle in wide valleys of rich agricultural land, reflecting more of a Lowland nature. This 'Lowland' feel is present in the whiskies, which tend to be less stringent than other Higland Malts.
Northern Highland and Islands Northern Highland and Islands

An extremely varied selection of distilleries and whisky types. Most are on island or seaside locations, with the resultant effect on the whisky.
Generally the whiskies exhibit the robustness of a good Highland Malt.
Perthshire and Southern Highlands Perthshire and Southern Highlands

These distilleries are located in an area from Alexandria to Pitlochry. They are all in inland, more sheltered locations, where the climate is less severe and the water less peaty than those in the Northern Highlands.
The whiskies tend to be milder and quite fruity. In many cases, more akin to Lowland Whiskies.
Speyside Speyside

Extending from the River Findhorn in the West to the Deveron in the East and inland to Dalwhinnie taking in the watersheds of the Rivers Spey and Livit, Speyside is considered to be the birthplace of the modern Scotch Whisky industry.
The whiskies, considered by many to be the ultimate in Scotch, are elegant, complex with refined smokiness. Some, being matured in sherry casks, have full sherry flavours. Others are more subtle with a lighter, more refined palate.
