Grain Whiskies Grain Whiskies

A continuous distillation process was invented by a Scot, Stein, but developed by an Irish exciseman called Coffey. The 'Patent' or 'Coffey' still allows the continuous production of a spirit that has a high alcoholic content and smooth texture, but the efficiency of the process removes many of the volatiles that impart flavour to malt whiskies.
Grain whiskies are made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, wheat and maize. The fermented liquor is distilled in a continuous still, making it possible to employ faster production rates and hence a cheaper product.
It is a whisky, not a neutral spirit, and must be matured for a minimum of three years.
